Dartmouth is a town and civil parish in the county of Devon. It is a tourist destination set on the western bank of the estuary of the River Dart, which is a long narrow tidal ria that runs inland as far as Totnes.
Dartmouth is famous for it's Royal Navy's officer training college -Britannia Royal Naval College - where all officers of the Royal Navy and many foreign naval officers are trained. King George V and King George VI were naval cadets at Dartmouth, as were the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales and the Duke of York. It is said that the Duke of Edinburgh met the then Princess Elizabeth at Dartmouth. Prince William spent a brief period at the College after leaving Sandhurst as part of his training with all three of Britain's Armed Forces.
The Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta takes place annually over three days at the end of August. The event sees the traditional regatta boat races along with markets, fun fairs, community games, air displays and fireworks. Bayard's Cove has been used in several television productions, including The Onedin Line. Many of the scenes from the BBC's popular series 'Down to Earth', starring Ricky Tomlinson, were filmed at various locations around the town.
Stunning attractions include Dartmouth Castle and the Dartmouth Steam Railway which terminates on the opposite bank of the river.
